STUDENT MINISTRY

6th grade - 12th grade

The program at Oakwood for teenagers is called “The Underground” and is for grades 6-12.  Our mission at Oakwood Youth is to form relationships with students and point teenagers to Christ.  We try to accomplish this by Bible messages on Wednesday nights and in-depth Bible studies on Sunday nights as well as various events throughout the year. Our events include summer camps and weekend retreats, in-house parties or lock-ins, trips to local establishments like Skyzone, and more *.

Our hope is that teenagers in our community would either come to know Jesus for the first time or grow in a relationship with Him.

Wednesday Nights/"The Underground": 6:30-7:30pm

The Underground

Wednesday Nights 6:30-7:30

Our Wednesday Night program, called "The Underground", is a fun night designed to introduce basic faith concepts to students or to refresh those concepts.  In the course of a night, most likely we will play some games, watch a few videos, hear a bible message, share about it in small groups based on age, and have a snack.  This is a great night for new students and is very low-commitment and not less intimidating.

Bible Study

Sunday Mornings 9:30-10:30

Our Sunday Morning Bible Study is our time for a more in-depth look at scripture.  We look at biblical themes, study various books of the Bible, and have relevant discussion about the application of scripture to our lives.  The goal for this time is to enhance the students' confidence in reading scripture on their own, which we believe leads to growth in their faith ownership.

camp cowen & centrifuge

June-July, various weeks

Each year, we send students who choose to go to the West Virginia Baptist Convention's Camp in Cowen WV (Camp Cowen).  There are two weeks of Middle School camps and two weeks of High School camps.  You can register your student at www.campcowen.org. We also take a group trip to various college campuses to a camp called "Centrifuge".  You can read more at fugecamps.com.

church league basketball

November to February

Oakwood facilitates church league basketball for any middle school or high school boy or girl who signs up AND attends church by the start of November.  If enough students in one age group and gender sign up, they will have an Oakwood sponsored team.  If there are not enough to fill a team, the league (Charleston Church Recreation Association) will combine them with another church. Students must attend  services regularly  to play.
